On September 30, 2026, a federal court in Brazil partially granted the government’s request for urgent measures requiring Discord to strengthen child-safety protections. The order sets deadlines for age-assurance, reporting and parental-supervision measures, but it is an interim ruling—not a final decision on liability or damages. Read the decision (PDF); the case is numbered 1094549-91.2026.4.01.3400.

What the order requires

The court requires Discord to demonstrate existing age-verification mechanisms and Portuguese-language safety operations, and to show how it will meet Brazil’s child-protection rules. The decision sets staged deadlines, including five days for several demonstrations, 15 days for specified reporting and moderation measures, and 30 days for guardian-linking, parental-supervision and related safeguards. G1’s report and the court decision describe the measures in more detail.

It also requires preservation of records of moderation actions connected to investigations for at least six months. For unjustified noncompliance after the applicable deadlines, the order sets a global fine of R$100,000 per day; the court says it is not multiplied for each missed obligation on the same day.

Privacy limits and case status

The ruling does not authorize blanket surveillance of private conversations or interception of messages. It limits Discord’s duties to content brought to its attention or identified through legitimate methods. ConJur’s legal analysis likewise describes the order as partial and interim.

The underlying case includes broader claims, but this order does not decide final liability or award the reported R$500 million in damages. The immediate requirements are directed at Discord; the decision does not itself instruct every user to submit identification.

What users in Brazil can do

If Discord presents an age or safety prompt, use the app or Discord’s official Help Center to confirm what is being requested. Don’t send identity documents or account details in response to unsolicited DMs or external links. For safety concerns, use Discord’s official reporting tools and preserve relevant dates and message links where it is safe to do so.

For your own saved conversations, Friendcord can help you search and organize Discord history. It is separate from Discord’s safety-reporting process and is not a substitute for preserving evidence requested by authorities.
