A Discord Group DM is a small private chat for people who do not need a full server. It is useful for planning, a regular friend group, or a short-lived conversation where channels and roles would be unnecessary.
Before you create a Group DM
You need to be friends with the people you want to add. Discord Group DMs support up to 10 members total, including you. For a larger group, a server is the better fit.
Create a Group DM on desktop or browser
Open your Friends List, choose the New Group DM control, then select or search for the friends you want to invite. Select Create Group DM to start the conversation.
Create one from an existing DM
Open a one-to-one DM, choose the control to add friends to the conversation, select the additional people, and confirm. This creates a new group chat without changing or deleting the original DM.
Create a Group DM on mobile
Open your DMs, select the New Group DM control, choose the friends to include, then tap Create Group DM. From an existing one-to-one DM, tap the person’s name and select the option to start a new group DM.
Make the chat easy to recognize
A clear name helps when you have several active chats. Open the Group DM name to edit it on desktop or browser. On mobile, open the conversation name, go to the group settings, and customize the group. The name is visible to everyone in the chat.
Pin the important details
Use pinned messages for plans, addresses, event times, or links people will need again. On desktop, open the message options and choose Pin Message. On mobile, long-press the message and choose Pin Message.
Manage notifications without leaving
If the group gets active, mute notifications instead of leaving the conversation immediately. Muting stops desktop and push notifications, but the group remains available when you are ready to catch up.
Add or remove people thoughtfully
Any current member can add friends while the group is below its member limit. Only the person who created the Group DM can remove a member, so use that control carefully and communicate when a change affects the group.
Leave a Group DM
On desktop or browser, right-click the Group DM in your DM list, choose Leave Group, and confirm. On mobile, open the conversation name, open group settings, choose Leave Group, and confirm. After leaving, the group disappears from your DM list and an existing member would need to add you back.

Does making a Group DM delete my existing one-to-one DM?
No. Starting a group from an existing direct message creates a separate conversation and leaves the original one-to-one DM unchanged.
Can I start a call in a Group DM?
Yes. Any member can start a voice or video call from the Group DM, and others can join or leave the call freely.
