What are Discord roles?
A role is a bundle of server permissions that can be assigned to members. Roles can also change how members appear through colors and icons. Members may have multiple roles, and Discord combines their permissions according to the server’s role and channel rules.
How to create a Discord role
1. Open Server Settings
Open the server menu, choose Server Settings, and go to Roles. Select Create Role to make a new role, then give it a clear name such as Moderator, Helper, Member, or Event Host.
2. Configure the role
Use the Display and Permissions sections to choose the role color, icon where available, and actions the role can perform. Give the role only the permissions needed for its job.

How Discord role hierarchy works

How to make a private Discord channel with a role
Create or edit a channel, open Permissions, and make the channel private or remove View Channel from @everyone. Then add the role or members who should have access. Channel permissions can override the broader server setup, so check both the role permissions and the channel-specific overrides.
Common Discord role mistakes
Giving everyone too much access
Do not use Administrator for ordinary members when they only need to post, react, or help answer questions. Start with the smallest permission set and expand it only when necessary.
Putting staff roles in the wrong order
A moderator role placed below the people it needs to moderate will not work as expected. Move the role higher in the hierarchy while keeping it below the roles it must not control.
Forgetting channel overrides
A role may have a server permission but still be blocked or allowed differently inside a specific channel. Check channel and category permissions when behavior seems inconsistent.
